Heat pumps key to breaking into new markets, says Mitsubishi Electric

Commercial director highlights heat pump technology as an opportunity to cross traditional boundaries

Mitsubishi Electric says it sees heat pumps as a key revenue stream in future years as the company looks to the technology to expand beyond traditional markets.

Donald Daw, the commercial director, told guests and colleagues last week at an annual conference in Daventry that Mitsubishi Electric is developing the technology to put heat pumps into as many heating applications as possible.

“We need to find new markets for our technology and skills and heat pumps used in the wider heating industry are an important part of that opportunity,” he said.

He also used the conference to call on all sides of industry - heating, ventilation and air conditioning - to highlight the benefits of heat pump technology: lower energy bills and carbon emission reduction.

Daw added: “We can do this by moving into the mainstream heating industry and away from being classed as a cooling-only industry.”

He said the time has come for industry to step over the general blurring of the boundaries and proceed into new and related areas using the energy saving potential of heat pumps.

Currently, Mitsibushi Electric is moving further into the micro generation sector with the launch of photovoltaic systems and is looking to establish a lead in the residential renewables sector with its low carbon Ecodan air source heat pump.

Daw also told delegates that Mitsubishi Electric and its major customers had increased market share despite the air conditioning market dropping 12 per cent over the previous year. He went on to caution that its research shows that market growth in single and small splits systems is very dependant on weather patterns, and that the larger system and VRF markets, where double digit growth had become the norm, would be hampered by the longer term effects of the recession.

The market will bounce back strongly when the investment cycle returns as the suitability of VRF products for heating and cooling modern buildings has not changed, he said.

Donald Daw was speaking at the BSP (Business Solution Provider) Annual Conference in Daventry to congratulate major business partners on a successful year.
