Plans for a new £200 million biomass power plant at near Stockton have been approved.

Developer Gaia Power said the scheme would create more than 400 construction jobs. The proposal for the wood-fired power station was approved by Stockton Borough Council’s planning committee.

The facility will be built on the Billingham Reach Industrial Estate. It will be fuelled with recycled chipped wood and produce energy to supply 80,000 homes a year.

It is hoped construction will begin at the site in the new year, for completion in 2012.
