Crystal Palace FC has announced plans for a redevelopment of Selhurst Park valued at between £75m and £100m.
The scheme involves the replacement of the existing Main Stand with a new five-storey section, increasing the ground’s overall capacity from 26,000 to more than 34,000.
Crystal Palace said it intends to submit a planning application to Croydon Council by the end of January.
If this is successful, construction will begin within the next 12 months.
The project is likely to take three years to complete, with the Main Stand remaining in full operational use throughout the build process.
This will involve a similar approach to that used by Liverpool FC in the redevelopment of its Main Stand in 2016/17.
The capacity of Palace’s Main Stand will rise from its current 5,400 to 13,500, including more than 10,700 general admission seats.
It will include improved facilities for supporters with disabilities and create hospitality facilities for more than 2,500 supporters, including a Tunnel Club and up to 28 boxes.
The development will also feature a new club museum.
KSS Group, which designed the new Main Stand at Anfield, is the architect for the project.
The new section will have an all-glass front in what the club says is an homage to the club’s earliest days, when it stood close to the original Crystal Palace on Sydenham Hill.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said: “We have worked long and hard and looked at several options over the years, including returning to the original site of Crystal Palace, which wasn’t viable.
“While we can’t go back to it, we can build a new one and today I am proud, in conjunction with our partners KSS, to introduce a new Selhurst Park with a new Crystal Palace for a new era.”
KSS director Nick Marshall said: “Our brief was to create an impressive sense of arrival and an experience the fans can be proud of, retaining the special atmosphere at one of the best grounds in the country.
“It’s already one of the best places to watch football and we certainly don’t want to ruin that; it has to be driven by the fan experience.
“There’s going to be a great relationship between the new stand and the Arthur Wait Stand, which is going to work fantastically.”
