In pictures: Record-breaking Spanish rail bridge nears completion

This spectacular photo shows the 996m Almonte Viaduct rail bridge over the Alcantara Reservoir in the Spanish province of Caceres as the project nears completion.

The bridge, being constructed by Spanish contracting giant FCC Construccion, will have an octagonal concrete arch spanning 384 m, setting the world record for high-speed rail use.

The €96.5m project is expected to be completed later this month or in early July.

It forms part of the AVE high-speed railway, linking Madrid with the Portuguese border.
