Highways England has selected 11 contractors for a new national road resurfacing framework that could be worth up to £3.3bn.
Aggregate Industries, Colas, Galliford Try, Hanson Contracting and Tarmac have all landed places on the four-year framework (see table), which will run from 2018 to 2022.
Under the framework, Highways England will be able to call on the contractors to carry out critical resurfacing work when needed, without having to go through a lengthy bidding process.
Four contractors have been picked for each of Highways England’s six regions. For each region, two firms will carry out major resurfacing work valued at over £1m, while two will carry out renewals work valued at under £1m.
Local authorities will also be able to use the services of the contractors for resurfacing work when needed in their areas.
Highways England executive director of operations Nick Harris said: “We know that drivers want and deserve good-quality, safe roads which is why since 2015 when Highways England was created we have replaced more than 4,400 miles of road surface.
“This new arrangement will help us tackle uneven road surfaces faster, in a more cost-effective and efficient way – keeping journeys safer and offering smoother journeys for the millions of drivers who use our roads every day.”
