Product Innovation category shows off cutting-edge construction

This category is all about innovation – namely, how a new product has innovated in the past 12 months to benefit construction companies.

A diverse range of products are nominated, including three products to improve the safety of working at height, two that deal with heating and ventilation, a noise and dust monitor, a damp-proofing product and an intelligent traffic cone.

Entrants had to make it clear to judges whether the innovation lies in performance, cost, reliability or other factors, while also providing evidence comparative to existing products. Any product launched in the UK within the last two years was eligible.

Commercial success in the market, success of marketing strategies, application of R&D findings and plans for continued capture of new customers were also considered by the judges.

Aggregate Industries: Thermastore
Thermastore aims to improve the overall efficiency of renewable heating systems, absorbing surplus heat during warmer seasons into an aggregate store and supplying heat during colder periods. The product is suitable for use in confined spaces and, in many instances, for retrofitting. Multiple properties can even run off the same Thermastore for maximum efficiency.

A-one+ & Highway Resource Solutions: Intellicone
Used on highway maintenance sites, the Intellicone improves the safety of road workers by transmitting an alarm when an errant vehicle hits a cone, alerting workers to a breach in the line of cones. The system is able to send text messages, interact with an unlimited number of portable site alarms and interface directly with client databases.

Casella Monitor: Multi Agent Monitor (MAM)
MAM is a fixed long-duration monitor for noise and dust offering 24/7 data capture. Data is transferred to a secure website where it can be viewed in any browser. Pre-defined alarms can be set, which can be sent by email or SMS. MAM helps companies comply with regulations and allows accurate reporting of noise and dust levels on site.

Nationwide Platforms: SkySiren
This product is designed to ensure operators of MEWPs are not pinned and unable to breathe. SkySiren reacts to sustained pressure on a rubber strip placed between the operator and the MEWP control panel. The pressure, which may indicate a trapped operator, is converted into a signal to stop the MEWP immediately, while also sounding an alarm.

RWD Kwikform: Ascent Safety Screen
This screen shields the public from falling debris, but also has a number of features contributing to reducing construction build times throughout a project. The fully sheeted system practically eliminates wind and rain from the top lifts, while the screen height enables the next lift of columns to be built within the protection afforded by the screen.

Scaffolding Solutions: Skaftray
Skaftray is designed to improve safety when operators are working at height from mobile scaffold towers, podium steps and MEWPs. It safely contains tools and materials, significantly reducing the risk of dropped object incidents and slips by keeping the floor space tidy. It has been adopted as best practice by several major companies, including Carillion and Laing O’Rourke.

Uzin: Uzin L3 Gold Moisture Control
This product provides damp-proofing for areas where moisture in the substrate is a problem. It has made protecting floors against moisture quicker and easier by reducing the whole damp-proofing process to less than four hours. Fitters just have to prime the floor and then mix and apply the levelling compound, protecting it against moisture.

Ventive: Ventive PVHR
Ventive PVHR is a new approach to ventilation, recovering heat from outgoing stale air and transferring it to incoming fresh air using wind and natural buoyancy for airflow. Overall tested heat recovery efficiency has reached up to 97 per cent and the product could save 4,000 kWh of heating energy, or 800 kg of CO2, per home annually.
