Training Initiative of the Year: Winner

Winner: A-one + Integrated Highway Services – No Strikes

The winner of this year’s Training Initiative category had a clear and measured approach to training, which left the judges seriously impressed.

A-one + Integrated Highway Services showed a logical step-by-step process for the creation of its initiative, which the judging panel agreed demonstrated a “clear and well thought-out” response to something the construction industry needed badly.

Roadwork is largely a manual process and despite advances in health and safety, eight roadworkers were killed and 126 seriously injured in England between 2009 and 2013.

In the period from June 2009 to December 2013, A-one+ experienced eight major strikes by road users on impact protection vehicles on its maintenance contracts – an average of 1.78 collisions per year.

Seven of these eight collisions were by HGVs.

As a result, the company developed No Strikes, a training programme with three clear aims: to engage with the freight industry to develop accredited training; to raise awareness of IPVs among professional drivers; and to obtain driver feedback to influence future design and policy.

The training is centred on actual video footage taken from on-board one of A-one + Integrated Highway Services IPVs.

Judges’ comment

This captured an accident on the A1 in North Yorkshire when an IPV was struck by an HGV.

The roadworker jumped clear just 1.5 seconds before impact.

Drivers would watch the footage and then assess the situation and the time leading up the impact.

Other elements to the training are entitled: Education, what is highways maintenance?; Developing an emotional connection, who works on IPVs?; and Trainee engagement, what should you do when you see an IPV?

The judges said this simple training had “a lot of bang for its buck”, having engaged with 14 freight companies to date that have now incorporated the training into their Certificate of Professional Competence programmes.

The company has invested £11,400 into the programme in total and estimated the direct cost for a replacement IPV is £54,800.

With 1.78 strikes per year, the annual accident cost is estimated at around £97,544, which could be saved through the training.

The initiative not only reduces the direct financial burden but also lowers other high costs associated with a collision, including the human, property, economic and medical costs.

Around 35,000 drivers have been reached and the video footage used has had 2,050 hits on YouTube.

The judges added that “this was effective and simple training that is saving lives”.

The panel was also impressed at this training programme’s ability to “step outside” the construction industry and engage with drivers across the UK.
