Costain bid manager Duncan Hasson tells us why he loves construction

Duncan Hasson talks diversity, electronics and 60-ton excavators to tell us what makes construction so great.

Q. How did you get into the industry?

A. I first started in the industry at a very young age, as my father is a civil engineer he brought work to home.

There’s a photo of me at 3 years old driving a three-pin roller down our driveway.

From that day forward through the years I progressed through to different heavy plant - from Bobcats to 60-ton excavators, I drove them all.  One highlight for me was sitting in the BG40 at Bauer’s factory.

Q. What is the best thing about construction?

A. Working together as successful team to build something that can be seen for years to come.

Q. If you could change one thing about the industry what would it be?

A. Get more woman in the industry, I get sick of looking at blokes all day.

Q. How should we encourage young people to join the industry?

A. We need to bring the industry into the technical world of electronics, use apps and smart phones etc to make life easier. Kids of today couldn’t survive without a smart phone.
