Morris & Spottiswood win £17m Glasgow housing contract

Glasgow-based construction firm Morris & Spottiswood has secured a £17 million contract to build 140 new homes at Murano Street in Firhill, Glasgow from Queens Cross Housing Association.

The scheme will see the construction of 32 four storey flats for rent on Murano Street, scheduled to be completed by the summer 2010.

A further 108 flats will be built in six storey block overlooking the canal, of which 66 will be for rent and 42 will be marketed for Shared Equity – a government initiative, targeted at first time buyers, to enable easier access to home ownership. These are due to be completed by 2011.

The total cost of the development is £22.8m million, of which £14.5m will be met by grant support from Glasgow City Council and £8.3m by private finance.

Douglas Bennett, managing director of Morris & Spottiswood’s housing division said “This contract will help sustain employment for our many employees and create opportunity for organisations and people in the local community.”
