Bouygues' Hallsville Quarter shows variety of roles in action

Hallsville Quarter is a major regeneration project in the heart of Canning Town, situated directly opposite the entrance to the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway station.

Bouygues’ development company Linkcity is developing the Hallsville Quarter site in conjunction with the London Borough of Newham – and Bougyues UK is building the project for its sister company.

On show during Tuesday’s Open Doors tour was phase two, which Bouygues is currently building and set to finish in October this year.

This phase will include 160 residential units for sale, 134 PRS units, 55 shared ownership units, and a 196-bedroom hotel – and is home to some of the tallest buildings in the entire development.

Construction News joins the only tour of the week, alongside eight students and two teachers from the Royal Greenwich Trust School.

During a presentation of the project before heading out on site, Bouygues corporate responsibility offier Luciana Campos asks the class why they are interested in construction.

The responses are really encouraging and wide-ranging. “Because it allows you to express your creativity, especially in design,” says one.

“Because you get to work in a place with other people,” says another.

“Because my dad works in the industry and I wanted to do what he does,” adds one more, showing the many different reasons that people get involved in this industry.

Site manager Thierry Sagot takes over and escorts us onto site, where we ascend the hoist to the 12th floor of one of the residential buildings to see an empty apartment.

From there, we descend a few floors at a time, each stop showing us an apartment more complete than the one above, and with different trades working – painting a perfect picture of the many different roles that go into shaping a successful project, and also how challenging it is to co-ordinate them all.

The sun is shining and our students take photos and ask lots of questions, gaining a vital insight into what a live construction site is really like.
