Police force merger plans 'to be scrapped'

Controversial plans to slash the number of police forces in England and Wales are to be scrapped, it was reported today.

The Times said Home Secretary John Reid would make an announcement tomorrow about the police mergers, which were proposed by his predecessor Charles Clarke.

But today the Home Office insisted that discussions were continuing and Mr Reid was not ``immediately'' planning to make an announcement.
