Bouygues to build £300m Cambridge uni research block

Bouygues is set to build a £300m physics research centre at Cambridge University after it was awarded a preconstruction deal on the project. 

The UK division of the French firm has landed an initial contract worth £8.5m to provide preconstruction input and professional services on the two new buildings that will make up a third laboratory facility – named Cavendish III – on the university’s western campus.

The preconstruction deal will run for 18 months, with construction set to start in early 2019 and complete in December 2021.

It will be the second project Bouygues is working on at the university, with the firm also currently constructing the Triangle, Cambridge’s assessment centre for international students.

Once completed, the new facility – named after famous hydrogen physicist Henry Cavendish – will include a range of laboratories, offices, clean rooms and multiple lecture theatres.

The contract is the first construction deal to come out of Cambridge University’s £500m contractors’ framework.

Last summer Construction News revealed that Bouygues had won a place alongside Balfour Beatty, Bam Construct, Kier and Laing O’Rourke on the framework’s highest-value lot covering projects over £30m.

Earlier this month, Bouygues UK revealed it had suffered a £78m loss for the year ending 31 December 2016, despite turnover increasing from £349.6m to £555.6m.
