Costain wins £150m Welsh road contract

Costain has won the £150 million contract to construct the A465 Heads of the Valleys road in south Wales, it announced this morning.

Costain, in partnership with Atkins, Halcrow and RPS Group, will design and construct an 8 km section between Brynmawr and Gilwern.

The company said the project – awarded by the Welsh government - would present significant engineering and environmental challenges as the road passes through a number of sites of special scientific interest, including the Clydach Gorge within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Chief executive Andrew Wyllie said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract and are committed to deliver a high quality, safe and cost effective scheme for the Welsh government and the local community.”

CN reported in September last year that Costain faced competition for the contract from Carillion, a Morgan Sindall/Alun Griffiths joint venture, a Bam Nuttall/Ferrovial team and a joint venture between Dawnus Construction and OHL.

  • For those of us that live their, another fantastic waste of public money. I questioned a person releasing the tender a year back, the best reason they could provide to do this project would to allow the M4 traffic to be eased and to make the road A465 all the same! the road hardley gets any traffic. 150m could be spent improving access from the M4 up the middle of the valleys to allow great quickier access to newport and cardiff.

  • Well 'Anonymous' - a good grasp on the English language would not come amiss!
The A465 upgrade is a critical element in the regeneration of the Eastern Valleys to access the business centers of the West Midlands.
Obviously it will also ease the M4 traffic, reduce fuel costs for haulage companies and deliver a good safe road which will link to the M4 in Swansea benefiting all of those communities on the way.
Sorry you do not like having it where you are, but
