Morgan Ashurst in £4.8m school win

Morgan Ashurst has won a £4.8 million contract to build Ynysowen Community Primary School in Aberfan, Wales.

The firm will build the school for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council to meet environmentally-friendly guidelines set by the Welsh Assembly.

A number of ‘green’ features will be incorporated into the new school including a rainwater harvesting system, ground source heating and natural ventilation to achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.

Work begins this month and is due to complete in February 2010.

The building be the first modern school to be built in Aberfan since the 1966 landslide in the village which killed 144 local people – including 116 school children.
