Wates lands £37m North-west priority schools

The Education Funding Agency has appointed Wates Construction as preferred bidder for the £37m North West 4 batch of priority schools.

Wates beat Kier to the batch of six schools in Stockport, Warrington, Wigan and Ellesmere Port, after the two contractors were shortlisted in January.

The £37m capitally funded batch of schools includes four primary and two secondary schools, which will be rebuilt under the Priority School Building Programme.

To date, contractors have been appointed to 14 capitally funded PSBP batches, comprising 91 schools. Procurement is under way on five batches of privately financed batches, comprising 46 schools.

The PSBP is rebuilding the 261 schools in most urgent need of repair in England by 2017.
