Willmott Dixon books £10m Southend hotel

Southend Airport owner Stobart Group has appointed Willmott Dixon to build a £10 million 4-star hotel in time for the 2012 Olympics.

The 129-bedroom, five-storey venue was designed by Leach Rhodes Walker.

It features a restaurant and private dining room with top floor panoramic views of the airport.

Southend Airport managing director Alastair Welch said:  “High quality and convenient hotel facilities are essential ingredients of successful regional airports and an important part of our plans to modernise London Southend airport.

“This hotel will greatly improve facilities for passengers, as well pilots and flight crew using the airport, whilst also becoming an exciting new venue and resource for local businesses and people.”

The hotel contract is the tenth Willmott Dixon has delivered this year.

Hotel sector manager Tim Wheeldon said company would use local labour and suppliers to help keep to the tight programme and complete in time for the Olympics.

“We are experienced hotel contractors and this, along with a healthy pipeline of additional work, underlines our ongoing commitment to the hotel industry,” he added.

The operator of the hotel will be announced in due course.
