Newcastle’s £200m Stephenson Quarter gets phase two approval

The next phase of Newcastle’s £200m Stephenson Quarter has been given the green light by councillors.

The newly approved phase of the masterplan will see the construction of a university technical college and a six-storey office building in the city centre.

The 1 ha site forms part of the wider Stephenson Quarter development, which is being brought forward by developer Clouston Group.

Designed by architects Xsite, the 54,000 sq ft university technical college, dubbed North East Futures, will specialise in the teaching of IT and healthcare science.

Teaching facilities will include science labs, lecture theatres and a sports hall, and the college will accommodate about 600 students.

The six-storey Phoenix building will be speculatively developed and include 50,000 sq ft of office space.

An existing building on the site, which used to house a Doves builders’ merchants, factory and warehouse, will be demolished to make way for the new buildings.

Phase one of the wider 2.8 ha project was completed in 2015, with a 250-bed Crowne Plaza hotel, a 360-space multi-storey car park and 35,000 sq ft of office accommodation all built by main contractor Galliford Try.

The plans for the new college and office building represent a departure from the original plans, which were submitted in 2008.

The developer had planned to build three separate buildings as part of phase two, including an art gallery, more than 100 residential apartments and a number of commercial units.

However, these plans were abandoned for commercial reasons and a new brief was issued in 2016.
