Six in the draw for £20m Milton Keynes casino and ice rink

Six contractors have been shortlisted for the chance to build a £20 million leisure complex including casino and ice rink in Milton Keynes.

Developers Helical Bar and Abbeygate are understood to have invited Kier, Osborne, Volker Fitzpatrick, Morgan Sindall, Bam and Vinci for the Leisure Plaza in Childs Way.

The scheme includes the refurbishment of the ice rink - home to ice hockey team Milton Keynes Lightning - and the construction of a new 3,798 sqm casino, with food, drink, conferencing, car parking, a 9,000 sqm supermarket and other retail facilities also included.

Designed by Q2 Architects the plaza is expected to take almost two years to build, with work expected to start in February 2012.

Abbeygate and Helical re-tendered the project in October after withdrawing plans for an £85m Quartet designed leisure scheme on the same site in 2007.

Around 140 new jobs are expected to be created in the casino part of the development.
