Wakefield receives stadium boost

Plans for a new stadium for Rugby League team Wakefield Wildcats have been granetd outline planning permission.

Wakefield will receive a financial boost if the stadium plans are fully approved after an anonymous backer offered to pay the club’s outstanding tax bill of £164,000 if the proposals are given the green light.

However, the council’s decision to grant outline planning permission is subject to the removal of a direction by the Highways Agency concerning travel plans and the possibility of a public inquiry.

Wakefield propose to be anchor tenants of the site at Junction 30 on the M62 motorway.

Chief executive James Elston said: “This is fantastic news and is the biggest day in the club’s modern history.

“We are aware that we have some boxes to tick but now we can move onwards and upwards. I would like to thank all supporters, players and staff who spent three hours outside showing their support for the club and also to Wakefield Council.”
